The day appeared on fire, mostly because of the freshly fallen leaves that now covered the lawns and streets of Fir City. It was really a quiet suburban, another leech to the Grand City, which was only a ten minute drive east. It was nearing winter, and for the northern states winter meant bitter cold, but while fall was here, everyone embraced each other with warm smiles and rosy cheeks. It was a fine time when you were rolled up in bed wrapped up in uncountable layers of blankets slowly drifting off to sleep as you listened to the rumble of the basement furnace. It was an early morning, and my usual high school grind began again as I slumped out of bed, just a week after MEA break. It was most likely six thirty in the morning, and my ride would most likely appear within the next half hour or so. As everyday went by I began to think of where our country was going. Of course I was young, nearly out of the wretched high school years and still being judged by adults to see if I was ready to be independent. Getting into a college was one of those tests, and I was uncertain as to whether or not I would pass. I was also an idealist, wishing for things to happen that were quite unlikely and my hatred for conservatism grew each day as I heard about our dying economy. My opinion of America has been changed throughout the years, I have always been a fan of history and I can only say that we have jumped over important hurtles too late to even make it in time before the sun engulfs us all. Racism still is a deciding factor it seems when thinking about how our government should be run. We are all too weak to even consider the fact that someday, we are going to have to band together as a people. Us versus the entire world...
I was quite unaware of what was really in store for me, and us as humans. I thought that today would be a normal day, but looking back at everything that has happened it seems almost impossible to think that I was even thinking about how we didn't have any cereal to eat. "My morning has been ruined!" I cried to myself, because my mother and father already departed for work, and my sister was still sleeping, she wasn't quite a highschooler yet, but I always respected her for some odd reason. We rarely fought over pointless things like bathroom time, or TV channels, in fact we rarely watched TV...
This morning I was forced to eat a breakfast bar, and thank goodness too- it is hard when you have a bag lunch your entire life because of lack of tolerance for the stuff the school dishes out. Seven five, and my ride appears and I get myself into the vehicle silent as usual. My name is unimportant to reveal, there is no need for names or other worthless qualities... I suppose someday I will I write my name down into this log but for now, just refer to me as Eldrin. "How are you this morning, Eld?" I was asked, as I was every morning by the same person each day. She was an old friend to say the least, and my answer had always been the same. "Good." everything was bad, but my life was good- in comparison to those who sometimes wonder if they are going to wake up the next morning with any food at all. I wasn't much of uniting kind of person, I always believed in the ideas of one of my lost friends, he was a supreme idealists, and an isolationist. He moved away from Fir City, to some other suburb when I entered middle school and so I never really saw him again.
After five minutes of mostly radio sound and no conversation we arrived at school and I departed to my usual spot. I wasn't followed by any of my comrades, they had their own places to inhabit and I was fine with my new fond solitude. Eld, is what everyone at my school called me. It was a nickname I have had since elementary school. Finally, class has begin, and I was dreaming about my fourth hour study hall and how I might write a story or an idea I might polish later. My friend who had moved away used to write stories all the time, and I enjoyed the hidden messages he implanted inside of them. I kept whatever he gave me so I could review them... he was so wise-- but something clearly was getting in his way. I thought of myself as his successor, and someday I will reach the pinnacle of wisdom in which he had somehow accomplished at a young age. After completely zoning out my calculus class, I dragged along throughout the day, thinking of the future. Mondays were good for that in my opinion. There was a lack of motivation inside of me that prevented me from really thinking about complex math or science and wondering more and more about things that important.
Perhaps... I am sorry, my log is hard to continue from this point, it was after third period that I complete zone out and for good reason... only a scion could tell you what happened next. The plan to keep us humans ruled and yet, not ruled at the same time.
Eld was eighteen years old, attending Fir high school on his senior year and was sitting, most comfortably in his third hour 'writing' class waiting for the bell to ring so he could do some actual writing instead of this bland and unimportant work. He had medium length brown hair that fell awkwardly across his head, which was slumped in his sleeved arms. The black hooded sweatshirt might suggest that he was, in fact, a hoodlum, but that was a mere illusion one would say. The desks were always hard to sleep in, but Eld had no problem slouching down in the middle of a boring power point presentation and just nodding off. His teacher, an enthusiastic woman who had a talent for making the most boring and simple activities sound hard and exciting. Soon the bell would ring and soon he would be free from this wretched hell that the school purposely called a writing course when they wrote about once a week. [Not including dull, third grade level notes].
'He... yes he was right about the educational field of this world, everything seems to be going rock bottom...' Eld was remembering the words of his long lost friend, who moved from Fir City, to neighboring Eagan. Eld himself was entranced by the mystical and endless possibilities of fantasy and magic. Sometimes, in a state of semi-delirium, he would think that if angels descended upon the world then all of their problems would be fixed... usually following and epic war against demons that threatened our society. 'What we need is an anti-human conflict... like an invading alien race, or some being that is going to threaten our entire world... then we as humans would bond together and defeat our enemies and hopefully understand that... we can live together as one race: the human race!' and with that thought, the bell rang and Eld, along with a couple dozen other students were released from the tyrannical grip of the school.
Eld stood up and left the classroom, find himself reaching for his Mp3 player and in the process accidentally bumping into a girl of average height in front of him. "um, sorry..." he said quietly slipping by not noticing her staring at him as he walked by. He also failed to notice that she was not wearing normal human clothes. Strange that nobody in the school noticed her at all. The strange white gown that fell over her shoulders, and down to the floor made her almost appear like a medieval princess among the garbage of modern attire. She continued her journey then, passing through students almost like a wraith.
Eld made it to the student commons, having completely forgotten about the mysterious girl, who would've normally gotten his attention had he not been so focused on getting to his destination. He was listening to something melodic, while holding the pen in his right hand spinning it around, holding his planner and thinking of something to write. 'I should do my homework...' was all that came to mind but he shrugged and began to draw some strange diagram in his planner. It was here that the loud speakers of the school were turned on. He wondered what it could be and removed his headphones, almost unconsciously. He had never taken off his headphones during the unimportant announcements before, but for some reason he couldn't keep them in his ears, he had to listen to what was about to be said. His heart was pounding in his chest, what was it that made him feel this way? This strange impending doom that would consume him for the rest of his life.
A faint sound emerged from the loud speakers, a soft lovely sound that spoke in a language he could not even understand. It wasn't English or French or German. It was inhuman, and it made him slowly feel uneasy hearing the strange words being sung to him. They were too clear to be heard from the loud speakers, what form of magic was this that bound him to do what it was telling him. His mind was subconsciously obeying, and his eyes closed and he could feel himself being shifted from one place to another. The world was all being shifted, spinning around over and over and over again. What was he trying to hold onto? Was there something wrong with him? He tried to open his eyes but all he could hear was the sound of the voice... it was clearly a female voice and then the image appeared in his mind. The girl, cloaked in a white gown, her long black hair falling across her back as her green eyes stared at him curious, maybe even confused. The song ended and the girl spoke to him.
"You saw... what human eyes shouldn't be able to see...who trained you?" the words echoed inside of Eld's mind as he tried to cover his ears, what was she saying? Trained? Eld wasn't trained in anything. He remembered bumping into the girl, but it seemed like such a long time ago. What was this girl? Why was she talking to him about being trained? "Shut up!" he roared gripping his head so tightly that he thought he felt blood trickling down his arms. "Leave me...alone!" he screamed, hearing his own voice caused his eyes to snap open forcefully. A single word echoed inside of his mind as he looked around the entire commons. "Alone... alone...." he repeated the words inside of his mind. What did it all mean? He saw everyone else studying, but there was something wrong about it. He couldn't feel his left arm at all, it was as if wasn't even there. Whenever he tried to move it, it wouldn't budge at all. Something was wrong with him, and he could feel it.
"Hey... what just happened?" he called out to see if anyone else really knew what had just occurred over the loud speakers. Nobody really answered, after all they weren't his friends and they were content in studying or conversing with each other. The next course of action was simple, get to the nurses office and try to get his arm looked at. He could walk at least and he made it over to the teacher. "Is something wrong Eld?" the teacher asked looking up from his white laptop. "I can't feel my arm, can I go to the nurse please?" he stated and the teacher frowned for a moment. "You can't feel your arm? How did that happen?" he asked and it was at this point that Eld figured he might as well ask if this teacher had experienced anything of what he just had gone through. "Did you hear a weird song or something... I don't know I feel really odd..." and the teacher shook his head. "I didn't hear anything..." this puzzled Eld very much. "Well, what about the announcement over the loudspeaker?" he asked and the teacher shook his head again. "No... I didn't hear that either, maybe you were sleeping... but either way, you best go to the nurses office. Be careful alright?"
Eld went on his way, but was not sure about the 'be careful' part of his teachers last sentence. Be careful of what? There was nothing to fear. He assumed the teacher was talking about his unmoving arm... or his overall delirium. He was walking towards a staircase, that would lead to the main office and later the nurse's office, when he heard something banging on the glass of a nearby doorway. He turned to look and what he saw bewildered him even more.
A being, with dark brown and gray skin was banging on the door fiercely. What caught Eld's attention most was the sharp claws that were on the creature's hands. It shrieked and howled and the glass was clearly breaking-- it was so horrifying to see that Eld merely stood there lost in his own thoughts and dreams and realities all fused into one. Was it a zombie? Or a demon? "What the fuck is that thing?" he eventually screamed and a nearby teacher turned, "Geeze... I have been hearing that question a lot, but not recently, what happened to you? Get confused?" Eld nodded, "Yeah, this sudden state of dementia has just struck me..." not only that, but Eld was actually talking to people he encountered, he rarely spoke being quite the accomplished introvert. "Yeah, we have been getting confused people all the time. Ever since those devilish creatures showed up we haven't really left the building at all..." the way this teacher spoke seemed weird, especially since these creatures did not exist a mere hour ago. "I really should lay down..." Eld stated going towards the office. "Ah, the best thing you need is some good old medicine. When was the last time you ate?" the teacher asked and the question seemed simple enough. "Yesterday..." but the teacher laughed, "Man, you really are confused. We only eat every other day, and today is a feeding day." Now, Eld was truly confused as most people would be when the world they were in a few minutes ago was completely erased and an entirely new one was placed in front of them.
It was Eld's turn to ask a question. "What is today's date?" he asked and the teacher pulled out his watch. "It is March 3rd." he said. When Eld had gone to his fourth hour study hall, it was October 23rd. Had nearly half a year gone by? He could not believe that he had been asleep for nearly half a year- in a blink of an eye he was half a year older.
I was quite unaware of what was really in store for me, and us as humans. I thought that today would be a normal day, but looking back at everything that has happened it seems almost impossible to think that I was even thinking about how we didn't have any cereal to eat.
